SA to co-host women's peace, security seminar

Pretoria - International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane is to co-host a women's seminar on peace and security, the ministry said on Friday.

Discussions at the seminar will include gender-based violence; issues affecting the girl-child, women as refugees as well as women and political representation.

She will co-host the seminar which kicks off on Sunday in Pretoria with the chairperson for the Progressive Women's Movement of South Africa (PWMSA) Baleka Mbete.

The two-day seminar is under the theme "Women, Peace and Security: Lessons Learnt, Shared Experiences and Building Sisterhood focusing on the role of the Lumumba Family in the liberation of the DRC.

South Africa has played a role in bringing an end to the war in the DRC, helping pave the way for democratic elections.

"In this regard, South Africa's support relates to the issue of women in armed groups; the integration of the army; demobilisation and re-integration into normal civilian life, especially in the rural areas," said the ministry
