The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has strongly condemned the conduct of a taxi driver who allegedly assaulted a female Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer.

Nompumelelo Salley was beaten by the taxi driver while she was directing traffic at the Joe Slovo and Houghton Drive intersection on Friday morning.

Salley suffered a bleeding nose and was taken to Milpark Hospital for treatment. The taxi driver was detained at a police station to face charges relating to attacking a law enforcement personnel.

RTMC CEO Advocate Makhosini Msibi called on the taxi association to come out and condemn this action which is tarnishing the image of their industry.

“As the traffic fraternity we are extremely disappointed by the conduct of the suspect, it is disgraceful and we hope the taxi association he’s affiliated to will take disciplinary measures against him.

“We are also determined to restlessly see the offender prosecuted and convicted in order to send a strong warning to the public that; attacking a law enforcement officer is an attack on the state,” Msibi said.

Msibi wished the officer a speedy recovery and hoped that the JMPD will provide Salley and her family the support she deserves. – SAnews.gov.za
