Mafikeng - The Rooiground Housing Development Project will begin next week and is expected to provide 1 000 housing units to the families living in the Rooiground informal settlement outside Mafikeng.
The R54.9 million project forms part of the Breaking New Grounds programme which aims to eradicate informal settlements and create vibrant and sustainable areas.
Each beneficiary will receive a starter house comprising a minimum of two bedrooms, a living area and inside bathroom. The area had already been equipped with electricity.
The project had been delayed because the previously appointed contractor was intimidated, threatened with violence and ultimately dismissed from site by some of the residents in October 2007.
However, the North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard Yawa said a new contractor had been appointed and the project was now ready to get underway.
The MEC visited the area earlier this week, accompanied by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Planning and Development, Gaasite Legalatladi and the Ward Councillor, Boitumelo Phatudi.
