Public Works to blacklist shoddy contractors

Pretoria - Contractors who do shoddy work have been warned that they will be blacklisted with Treasury.

Public Works Minister Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde said this will ensure that they do not get any tenders or work from government.

The minister ordered a report on the contractors during her inspection of buildings at the Wonderboom Military Base, east of Pretoria, on Tuesday.

The visit at the base was prompted by a report handed to the Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu, which painted a bleak picture about the situation at the base.

Mahlangu-Nkabinde was shocked upon hearing the conditions under which the defence force members were working due to the state of decay of buildings, especially the residences at the base.

The minister was also told that some of the things that needed to be replaced at the residences were stoves. "I'm determined to work with my team to get things done," she said.

Yesterday, the minister visited the Doornkop military base in Johannesburg, where she also found incomplete work. She said by Friday, a contractor will be appointed and work will begin as early as January.

In a presentation made to the minister, concerns were raised about a water purification system, security and lights.
