Pretoria - A team of detectives has been set up to investigate the killing of two police officers in Dobsonville, Soweto, on Wednesday afternoon.
The two policemen were driving in an unmarked white car in the township when about eight assailants, who are believed to have chased the officers, shot at them.
During the chase, the police collided head-on with another car. After the crash, the suspects shot at the police. The occupants of the other car were unharmed.
Police say the suspects fled the scene with police guns and dockets.
The motive of the killing is not yet known. Police are investigating.
The two police officers were a 50-year-old warrant officer and a 40-year-old constable from the Moroka Police Station’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
As many as 58 police officers have been murdered in South Africa this year alone.
Government has raised concerns about the police killings, saying it is an attack on the foundation of democracy. - SAnews.gov.za
