Pretoria – The national Results Operations Centre (ROC) was a hive of activity when President Jacob Zuma, the leader of the African National Congress (ANC), did a walkabout through the elections nerve centre on Thursday night.

The President greeted Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials and leaders of various political parties.

True to form, the President looked relaxed and in good spirits, as results indicated that his party remained in pole position. As at 8pm, 82.67% of national votes had been counted.

The ANC had the lion’s share at 62.95%, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) stood at 22%, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at 5.36%, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) at 2.56% and the National Freedom Party (NFP) claimed 1.70% of the national vote.

The IEC had earlier said that it was likely that 18 million votes were cast in Wednesday’s national and provincial elections. – SAnews.gov.za
