Thursday, January 23, 2014

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has authorised a probe into allegations of serious maladministration in the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

The President on Wednesday signed a proclamation directing the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate, amongst others, claims of maladministration in connection with the affairs of COGTA, improper or unlawful conduct by the officials of the department, unlawful appropriation of public money and intentional or negligent use of public money.

The allegations to be investigated by the SIU relate to the appointment of a service provider to render technical support and administrative services in respect of the Ward Based Co-operatives Programme of COGTA.

The SIU will also look into payments that were made by the department in a manner that was allegedly not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable or cost-effective, contrary to, among other things, legislation and policies. – SAnews.gov.za
