President to address Nursing Summit

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma is expected to address the National Nursing Summit in Johannesburg this morning, which aims to introduce and discuss measures geared at improving the public health sector's performance.

The three-day summit, which will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre, will be held under the theme "Reconstruction and revitalisation for a Long and Healthy Life for all South Africans".

The summit, which is hosted by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and provincial health MECs, will be attended by hundreds of current and retired nurses and unions.

It comes at a time when the department is introducing various measures geared at improving the performance of the public health sector and improving human resources development and management in the health sector.

Other key issues expected to be addressed during the summit include nursing education and training, ethical and value system of nursing, planning, resourcing and financing nursing as well as creating an enabling environment for nursing, which will look at the role of the nurse in the improvement of health outcomes.

The summit will end on Thursday. - BuaNews
