Pretoria - Government says it has taken note of the open letter signed by Bishop Joe Seoka and Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of the South African Council of Churches, Reverend Edwin Arrison of Kairos Southern Africa and Reverend Moss Ntlha of the Evangelical Alliance of South Africa, raising concerns about the "moral decay of the country".
The Presidency in a statement on Tuesday said building a better society was the responsibility of every South African. Government is committed to working with all stakeholders to achieve the goal of a truly united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa.
"It is against this background that President Jacob Zuma, on the 28th of November 2012, met with the National Religious Leaders Council, an interfaith umbrella body representing the sector, to discuss challenges facing the country.
"The meeting agreed that it is necessary to hold a summit in the new year, to discuss challenges facing the country so that the faith-based sector can make its contribution to making South Africa a better place for all," it said.
The Presidency thanked the signatories for raising the issues that they have raised as part of the debate of making South Africa a better place.
"It is hoped that they will be able to raise these views at the government-interfaith Summit so that we can all collectively work together to take the country forward," said the Presidency. - SAnews.gov.za
