Premier pushes for speedy payment of creditors

Pretoria - North West Premier Thandi Modise says delayed payment to creditors needs to be investigated to check if soliciting of bribes and corruption are not the root of non-compliance with the Public Finance Management Act.

"Non-payment of creditors within 30 days is in violation of the Public Finance Management Act and needs to be urgently addressed if we are to achieve a clean audit by 2014 across provincial government departments, municipalities and public entities," said Modise on Tuesday.

According to a resolution made at the North West Premier's Coordinating Council held last week in Taung, a provincial support unit to fast track departmental creditor payments made after 30 days is to be established by January 2012.

The Department of Finance recommended the establishment of the unit as part of audit outcomes of the North West Provincial Departments and Public Entities for the year ended March 2011 as well as for the Municipalities and Trading Entities for the year ending 30 June 2011.
