Pretoria - North West Premier Thandi Modise has welcomed confirmation that disciplinary action is being taken against those responsible for the reported Nazi salutes at North West University's Potchefstroom Campus.

"It is encouraging to hear that action is being taken to ensure that these kinds of practices are not repeated. There is no place for practices that undermine the strides we have made towards building a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society.

“The sceptre of racism and ethnicity in all its manifestation should remain buried in the ugly past we are all struggling to forget," said Premier Modise.

The salute was allegedly performed during an initiation ceremony at the campus.

Earlier, Premier Modise had strongly condemned the incident. She also echoed President Jacob Zuma and Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande's call for the university to get rid of any racial practices. – SAnews.gov.za
