Kimberley - The official opening of the Northern Cape Provincial legislature has been postponed after Premier Hazel Jenkins collapsed during her State of the Province Address.

The Premier, who collapsed while reading her speech at the podium, was transported to an undisclosed hospital in an ambulance. It is not yet clear what may have led to her collapse and provincial officials did not want to speculate on the matter.

Earlier, as she entered the Christian Revival Chruch, Just outside Kimberly, she had waved and greeted delegates.

Provincial spokesperson Bronwyn Thomas told BuaNews that she was with the Premier last night and she seemed to have been in good health. "I was also with her again this morning and she seemed fine," she said.

The delegates and senior provincial government officials wished Jenkins a speedy recovery.

The Office of the Premier is expected to issue a statement later today.
