Portfolio Committee congratulates Team SA

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation on Friday congratulated Team SA athletes participating in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships currently underway in London.

“It is encouraging to see our athletes excel in the manner they have both on the track and in field events. Many of our sporting heroes have put our country on the map and represented us as nation with enthusiasm,” said Committee Chairperson Beauty Dlulane.

This as team South Africa has won several medals in the championships that began last Friday.

To date South Africa has obtained five medals. Long jumper Luvo Manyonga and athlete Wayde van Niekerk obtained two gold medals while Van Niekerk also received a silver medal in the 200m semi-finals on Wednesday.

Ruswahl Samaai, won a bronze medal in the men's long jump on Saturday while Caster Semenya also obtained a bronze medal on Monday.

“There can never be a better platform and a better foundation for Athletics SA and SASCOC [South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee] to build for the future than the kind of performances our athletes have demonstrated in London. The Committee and all South Africans truly appreciated the performances of all the athletes,” she said.

The Committee wished Semenya everything of the best in her race tonight and going into the final. The 16th edition of the IAAF World Championships will conclude on Sunday. – SAnews.gov.za
