Pretoria – The Department of Water and Sanitation says the pollution of the Nyl River in Modimolle, Limpopo, has been contained.
The Department’s Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement (CME) Unit was dispatched to Modimolle on Monday after an incident relating to pollution of the Nyl River was reported.
According to the department, the pollution was caused by a truck transporting sulphuric acid, which overturned in the city centre and the spillage impacting on the water course.
“As a result to the spillage and pollution, the fauna and flora within the water course has been negatively affected. The department’s CME Unit is on site and has been since the department received notice of the spillage on Monday afternoon.
“The Compliance Unit has set up a disaster team in the town which will be looking into the matter progressively. The pollution has been contained whilst further investigations into the disaster are underway,” said department spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.
Ratau said a progress report will be tabled at a meeting later on Tuesday, where the community will be advised accordingly. – SAnews.gov.za
