Pretoria – Police are trying to identify the partially burnt body of a child found in a mine dump in Reiger Park, on Saturday afternoon.

The partially burnt body was spotted by a passer-by who alerted police.

However the family of Cuburne Lavone van Wyk, 3, from Ramaphosa Informal Settlement, in Reiger Park, are convinced it is him after he went missing, on Wednesday, while playing with his siblings.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele has expressed shock at the incident and appealed to the community to help police find the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

“What is of great concern to us as the City is that a 10-year-old was found dead in the same spot last year. We call for the law enforcement agencies to take a particular interest in that mine dump to put this evil practice to halt,” Zweli Dlamini, mayoral spokesperson said.

The City of Ekurhuleni said it will provide social workers to assist the family to deal with the loss.

Furthermore, it will be in touch with the family to see how it can contribute to ensure that the boy receives a dignified funeral.

This incident comes in the wake of recent tragic incidents involving toddlers.

Three-year-old, Luke Tibbetts of Westbury died on Friday, after being on life support for several days. He was shot in the head by a stray bullet.

In July, four-year-old Taegrin Morris, also from Reiger Park, lost his life when he was dragged beside his mother's hijacked vehicle. - SAnews.gov.za
