Pretoria – Police in Dawn Park have arrested a man (33), who is suspected of having shot and killed a police constable.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Constable Harry Ngoepe (29) and his colleague were attending a domestic violence complaint on Monday evening involving a man and his mother-in-law in Windmill Park.

“Police confronted the man but he fled the scene on foot. A police constable followed him into a nearby open veld, while the other member followed them with a van,” said Dlamini.

As the driver of the van could not locate them in the open veld, he summoned other SAPS members to the scene.

Dlamini said as they were searching, a constable was found with a bullet wound in the head. His service pistol had been stolen and it was suspected that he was shot by the man he was chasing. The constable died on the scene.

A manhunt was launched last night and the suspect was later arrested in the same area of Windmill Park. He has been charged with murder.

The suspect will appear in the Alberton Magistrate's Court soon. - SAnews.gov.za
