Police deployed to curb taxi violence

Thursday, July 20, 2017

Law enforcement agencies will be deployed to all the identified hotspots that have been affected by violent attacks involving meter taxi and e-hailing (Uber) operators, particularly in Gauteng.

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi and Police Minister Fikile Mbalula met on Wednesday to discuss the increasing violent attacks involving the two operators.

The Ministers have appealed to the affected parties to stop any public spats that fuel and prolong the tension.

They have also called for calm while government is finalising the National Land Transport Act Amendment Bill, which is currently before Parliament. The Amendment Bill will include e-hailing public transport services.

Members of the public, who have any information that might lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of this violence, are encouraged to contact their nearest police station or to report incidents by calling 10111.

Minister Maswanganyi will soon meet meter taxi and e-hailing operators. Details of the meeting will be made available to the public. – SAnews.gov.za
