PikitUp strike comes to an end

Friday, December 4, 2015

Pretoria - Employees of PikitUp, who were on strike for two weeks, are expected to return to work today.

The strike left the Johannesburg CBD littered with waste as well as a foul smell.

Gauteng MEC of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo intervened in the labour dispute by holding a meeting the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu), Gauteng Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) secretary Dumisani Dakile and City Manager Trevor Fowler.

The meeting to resolve the labour dispute started on Monday.

“The parties resolved to enter into a mutually beneficial agreement to relieve the residents of the City of Johannesburg of the inconvenience brought to bear on their quality of life by the ongoing unprotected strike with legitimate workers’ demands,” he said.

MEC Mamabolo has appointed Advocate Azhar Bham to work with the parties to facilitate a resolution to the dispute. – SAnews.gov.za
