Pikitup chairperson, board members resign

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Pretoria - Pikitup board chairperson Phumla Radebe and several board members have resigned, according to the City of Johannesburg.

The city's Communication Director Gabu Tugwana confirmed the resignations of officials at the waste management agency, saying the city regretted receiving the letters of resignation.

"The correspondence is currently being managed by the City Manager in his capacity as the Secretariat of the Mayoral Committee and it will be discussed at the next scheduled meeting of the Mayoral Committee on Thursday, 14 April 2011," he added.

Pikitup's managing director Zami Nkosi also resigned last week.

The resignations come amid a strike by refuse workers, which began last week.

Workers affiliated to South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) are demanding, among other things, that an internal investigation be commissioned into allegations of corruption and tender irregularities.

Also included in Samwu's demands is an immediate stop to what they call money being wasted on contract workers, and the change from temporary contracts to permanent employment.

The union also wants management to look into wage disparities that it says have existed in the department for years. - BuaNews
