Rustenburg – Teaching and learning at Keledi Middle School in Phokeng, outside Rustenburg, will become more exciting with the donation of 26 laptops to the school.
The donation from Telkom forms part of the School Connectivity programme, which aims to contribute to the improvement of education outcomes through the use of information communication technology (ICT).
The school will also receive internet connection from Telkom for two years.
Teachers at the school will be provided with ICT training to enable them to make maximum use of the e-connect for teaching and learning.
Speaking at the official handing over of the laptops on Tuesday, Basic Education Deputy Minister Enver Surty encouraged learners to focus on their studies.
“I’m confident that with the laptops, the learners are going to improve on their studies. Hard work and perseverance is the key to success,” he said.
Surty told the learners to use technology to their advantage.
He said there was still a need to explore various ICT solutions to support teaching and learning in schools.
“As a department, we believe that ICTs have a potential to enhance the quality of education by supporting teaching and learning in the classroom.
“We trust that other companies will follow the lead of Telkom Foundation and work with us to improve the quality of learning,” he said.
Learners at the school were excited to get laptops.
Tsholofelo Matsilenyane, a learner at the school, said she was thankful.
“Now we are going to have access to modern education, and learning is going to be more exciting. We are going to work hard,” she said.
Head of Telkom Foundation Sarah Mthintso said the Connected School initiative introduced a valuable dimension to education. “This will go a long way to giving the learners the tools to excel in their studies and to becoming leaders in their communities.”
The school has a total of 930 learners, 70 of whom are in matric.
School principal Herman Mautle told SAnews they were looking forward to good results at the end of the year.
