Parole board to decide on Staggie’s day parole

Pretoria - The Correctional Supervision and Parole Board is expected to make a decision within 10 working days on whether to revoke the parole granted to Rashied Staggie.

Staggie, a day-parolee, who was re-arrested earlier this month following allegations of parole violation, appeared before the disciplinary committee on Wednesday.

On Thursday, he appeared before the Case Management Committee of Pollsmoor, where he requested time to consider his options and possible representation in the proceedings by a legal practitioner or to represent himself.

In terms of the regulations, Staggie has up to seven days to decide on the kind of representation at these proceedings.

Regional Commissioner of the Western Cape, Delekile Klaas, said the investigation conducted after his precautionary re-arrest concluded its work last week, and found that Staggie had a case to answer before the administrative and statutory bodies mandated to handle parole violations.

Klaas dismissed claims that the parole was revoked and that the decision was politically motivated. He said only the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board can revoke the parole granted by itself to Staggie.

“The security and administrative staff of Correctional Services cannot revoke any offender's parole, but can re-arrest a parolee that allegedly violated his or her parole conditions, as in the case of Staggie. The Constitution is clear on the fundamental rights of people regarding political associations,” Klaas explained.

He added that merits and substantive elements of the case against Staggie would not be discussed in public and the media, as these could compromise the processes and prejudice the participants.

“A statement will be issued when the parole board has made its decision, which could be available within 10 days.” – SAnews.gov.za
