Pretoria - The Gauteng Health Department has recruited over 8 000 officials since the beginning of the year.

In a statement on Tuesday, the provincial department said 8 371 officials have been employed from January to October 2016.

“Of these employees, verification of qualification was not done for about 656 professionals in community service because this is the last leg of training to enable a health professional to be registered with the relevant statutory body such as the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and Pharmacy Council,” said the department.

Once officials complete their community service, they will then receive a certificate registered with the HPCSA to practise.

A further 832 health professionals and administration internship officials verification will be conducted after completion of the community service period by statutory bodies.

“In terms of administrative internship, only those that will be appointed permanently by the department will be verified upon completion of internship.”

In addition, 1 126 student nurses, technologists and therapists and 292 on learnerships have also not yet been verified, as they are still undergoing training.

About 3 991 health professionals were all verified through the relevant statutory councils including the HPCSA, SANC and Pharmacy Council.

“The process of verification of qualifications is ongoing and the cost effective systems and processes, including work experience, financial and criminal background checks, human resource verification qualifications with SAQA have been put in place since the previous financial year,” said the department. – SAnews.gov.za
