Pretoria - Delays in flights at OR Tambo International Airport, caused by an early-morning illegal strike by BidAir staff, are expected to be resolved by midday.

Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) spokesperson, Solomon Makgale, told BuaNews that ACSA was informed of an illegal strike by about 200 BidAir employees shortly after 6.30am.

BidAir provides ground handling services as well as baggage handling to the airport.

"However, at 8am we received information that the strike had been called off following discussions with management of BidAir," said Makgale.

As a consequence there were several flights which were delayed by up to an hour, said Makgale, adding that only five aircraft, two Kulula and three Comair flights, were delayed.

"The five have since taken off. However, we expect the knock-on effects to last up around midday today," said Makgale.

ACSA urged passengers to contact the airlines to ascertain the extent of the delay.
