Pretoria - Operations at OR Tambo International Airport have resumed to full capacity following an incident of attempted cable theft on Sunday morning.
Cables used to refuel aircraft were severely damaged when thieves tried to steal them, leading to massive flight delays.
“Airports Company South Africa wishes to assure its passengers and partners that operations at OR Tambo International Airport have resumed to full capacity this morning,” said Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) on Monday.
“We can confirm that normal fuelling operations have resumed after the airport had been operating at significantly reduced fuelling capacity for about 10 hours yesterday. Technicians were able to restore power to the badly damaged cables just after 8pm last night. The fuel pumps are now able to transmit fuel for uplift into aircrafts,” said OR Tambo International Airport spokesperson, Unathi Batyashe-Fillis.
Together with its partners, Acsa will continue to institute preventative and corrective measures to “ensure such incidences remain top priority given the impact”.
The South African Police Service is investigating the case.
ACSA operates South Africa’s nine principal airports, providing airlines with world-class, secure infrastructure.
It was formed to own and operate the nine principal South African airports, including the three main international gateways of OR Tambo, Cape Town and King Shaka International Airports. - SAnews.gov.za
