NW voter registration kicks off slowly

Pretoria - Registrations for the forthcoming local government elections have kicked off rather slowly in the North West province, said Provincial Electoral Officer Dr Tumelontle Thiba.

Thiba told BuaNews that despite the slow pace, all the 1 578 registration stations in the province opened on time and they were all accessible.

"We hope that the numbers will increase as the day progresses," she said, adding that no incidences had been reported thus far.

"We believe that [residents] are being held up by other commitments and once they are done they will turn up," she said.

Earlier this week, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) appealed to young people to come in their numbers to register.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Sicelo Shiceka, is yet to release the actual date for the local government elections, which are expected be held anytime between March and May.

The 2011 municipal elections will elect the members of the district, metropolitan and local municipal councils, who, in turn, will elect the mayors of the municipalities to office.
