Pretoria – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will appeal the judgement and sentence in the Oscar Pistorius case.
The NPA on Monday issued a statement confirming that since 20 0ctober 2014, the prosecution team, Advocate Gerrie Nel and Advocate Andrea Johnson, have been hard at work studying the judgement, researching and also consulting with legal experts with the view to establish whether or not there are sufficient grounds to appeal both the judgement and sentence.
“Today we announce that the decision to appeal both the conviction and sentence has been taken.
“The appeal on conviction is based on the question of law. The merits and the demerits of the NPA’s argument in this regard will become evident when we file papers for leave to appeal,” said the NPA.
The prosecutors are now preparing the necessary papers in order to be able to file within the next few days.
Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide last month. He was sentenced to five years in prison for the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. – SAnews.gov.za
