Notice period for cities wanting to host Afcon matches

Monday, December 5, 2011

Pretoria - The South African Football Association (Safa) has issued a notice to municipalities interested in serving as host cities of the 2013 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) and the 2014 African Nations Champions (CHAN).

Safa has sent out letters seeking expression of interest from local municipalities and interested provinces to consider hosting a selected number of matches of the two competitions.

Interested cities have until 10 December to return the completed expression of interest form to Safa headquarters at Nasrec, Johannesburg.

The Afcon is a Confederation of African Football (CAF) sanctioned tournament which came into existence in 1957. It is the premier football competition in Africa.

South Africa replaced Libya as hosts of the 2013 Championship, while Libya will instead organise the 2017 tournament and this leaves Safa with a shortened time period within which to commence preparations for hosting the tournament.

Safa will establish a local Organising Committee for the tournament that will then communicate the official requirements for the hosting of matches and provide the interested host cities with the necessary contractual documentation.

Once the completed documents have been received by the LOC, the LOC will adjudicate the applications and appoint host cities for the two tournaments.
