Not clear if Madiba would attend closing ceremony

Pretoria - It will only be clear on the day, if former President Nelson Mandela might or might not be attending the closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.

The closing ceremony will take place at Soccer City at 18:30 before the final match between Spain and the Netherlands kicks-off at 20:30.

Information Communications Manager at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang, on Wednesday confirmed FIFA's open invitation to Mandela to attend the closing ceremony.

"We note FIFA's open invitation to Mr. Nelson Mandela to attend the closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. We reiterate that Mr. Mandela and his family will make the decision about whether he attends or not on the day," he said.

The anti-apartheid leader missed the opening of the first FIFA World Cup on African soil on June 11 following the tragic death of his 13-year-old great-granddaughter Zenani. She died in a car crash returning from the World Cup Kick-Off Concert at Orlando Stadium.
