No teaching yet in Tlakgameng

Pretoria - With 94 days before Grade 12 learners sit for the National Senior Certificate examinations, teaching at 19 schools in the Tlakgameng village in the North West has not yet resumed.

As most schools across the country re-opened last week after a lengthy break for the World Cup, learners in Tlakgameng could not return to their classes because five schools in the area had been torched during a protest march by the community. They are demanding that a 20km road between Tlakgameng and Ganyesa be tarred.

At the time, North West Education MEC Johannes Tselapedi decided to close the schools saying that the situation was not conducive to learning and teaching. The community had vowed to continue with the protest until their demands were met.

Last week, North West Premier Maureen Modiselle, accompanied by representatives from the Department of Public Works and other education officials, held a meeting with the Tlakgameng community in an attempt to resolve the situation and it was announced that the schools would reopen this Monday.

However, the schools are still closed.

North West Education spokesperson Charles Raseala said it was not clear when teaching would resume but hoped that an agreement would be reached between parents and government officials soon.

"The provincial government and Public Works Department are trying to resolve the matter," said Raseala
