No formal charges against hostage miners

Johannesburg - No formal charges have been laid yet against the temporary mine workers who held hostage their supervisors for several hours at the Crocodile Mine, near Brits.

According to reports, the miners released their supervisors and surfaced on Saturday morning following a successful mediation between the parties involved.

The drama started on Thursday morning when 500 miners decided to lock themselves in a mine shaft, taking several supervisors hostage for leverage.

The miners, who were demanding to be employed permanently, threatened to stay underground until their demands were met.

A court interdict, obtained by two mining contractors employing the workers, was served on the striking mine workers on Friday afternoon in an attempt to stop the strike.

Normal operations at the mine are expected to resume on Monday.
