Pretoria - Nkangala District Municipality has been commended for achieving a clean audit outcome for the first time in the 2014/15 financial year.

Auditor General Thembekile Makwetu visited Mbombela last Friday to give the audit outcomes for all the municipalities in the province at a Premier’s Coordinating Forum.

Speaking at the forum attended by the chief financial officers from the municipalities, Makwetu said Nkangala improved from getting an unqualified with findings in 2013/14 to a clean audit outcome in 2014/15.

Other municipalities, including Gert Sibande District Municipality, Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, Dr Pixley Ka-Isaka Seme Local Municipality, Nkomazi Local Municipality and Umjindi Local Municipality improved their audit outcomes from qualified with findings to unqualified with findings.

“There has been a slight improvement in the overall outcomes and a decrease in the number of disclaimed auditees from 36 percent to 17 percent. In 2014/15, Steve Tshwete Local Municipality regressed from unqualified with no findings to unqualified with findings.

“We congratulate Nkangala District for this improvement. They are setting a good example. We hope they will lead by example and help other municipalities in the region to do well,” said Makwetu.

Mpumalanga Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Refilwe Mtsweni also commended Nkangala, saying it took the leadership decisions to work very hard and comply with the regulations.

“In as much as the term for the political leadership in the municipalities is coming to an end in August, the administrative leadership should continue to implement the recommendations of the Auditor General.

“We commend Nkangala District Municipality for receiving a clean audit. We hope the new political leadership that will come after the local government elections will continue with the good work,” said MEC Mtsweni.

Four municipalities -- Thaba Chweu, Emalahleni, Emakhazeni and Msukaligwa --continued to get disclaimer audit opinions from the Auditor General, as in the previous financial year.
