Sunday, January 23, 2011

Pretoria - Members of the public are requested to submit suggestions and motivations on the renaming of 11 correctional centres.

Eleven correctional centres have been identified for renaming as part of recognising their place and role in shaping the history of South Africa.

The 11 correctional centres identified for renaming are Johannesburg, Pretoria Central and Leeuwkop in Gauteng, Barberton and Modimolle in the Limpopo/Mpumalanga/North West Region, St Albans and East London in the Eastern Cape, Pollsmoor in Western Cape, Kroonstad in the Free State/Northern Cape Region, as well as Durban Westville and Pietermaritzburg Correctional Centres in KwaZulu-Natal.

Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula announced the name changing process for the correctional centres in an advertising campaign started on Sunday.

According to the campaign, the renaming will recognise "key event, geographic significance and personalities associated with these facilities."

The new names will be announced on 21 March 2011 as part of the programme aimed at celebrating Human Rights Day. Mapisa-Nqakula appealed to all communities and stakeholders to join hands in accelerating the transformation of the department and in helping to break the cycle of crime.

She has also established a task team, led by Chief Deputy Commissioner Zach Modise, which will also hold consultative meetings.

All submission must be forwarded to Zach Modise on or before 4 February 2011 by postal address: CDC Corrections, private Bag X136, Pretoria, 0001 or email submit@dcs.gov.za or fax 0123288326 / 0865691482.

For a submission to be considered, the suggestions and motivations should not be more than 500 words.
