Pretoria - Students interested in the law discipline now have an opportunity to enrol for a brand new programme in Occupational Risk Law at the University of the Free State (UFS).

The B.Iur. in Occupational Risk Law degree programme will be available from 2011 and interested students can register now for next year's first semester.

The programme is the first of its kind in the country. It was developed in conjunction with UFS and IRCA Global, an international risk management solution provider in the areas of safety, health, environment and quality.

Under the programme, the university will offer short learning courses, a diploma and a degree in Risk Management.

University spokesperson Lacea Loader said the programme was designed to develop and qualify professionals knowledgeable in the field of occupational risk law as prescribed by South African legislation and international best practices.

"It further offers a qualification based on a well-researched basis of applicable legal principles, combined with safety, health, environmental and quality risk management principles applicable to employers and employees in a specialised industry," said Lacea.

The programme will help the country achieve the nationally stated objective of legal safety, health and environmental quality assurance in the workplace and within the broader community.

Once students complete their degrees or diplomas, they would be eligible to enrol for applicable post graduate diplomas or equivalent Honours degrees.

After that, students can move on to Magister Degrees.
