New Gauteng Provincial Commissioner named

Pretoria - National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega has appointed Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba as the new Gauteng Provincial Commissioner. 

Mothiba, who has been described as a competent, experienced and skilled leader, was divisional commissioner for visible policing and has been acting provincial commissioner of Gauteng since last year.

“The SAPS management team and I are confident that Lt General Mothiba is the right person to lead the SAPS in Gauteng. He has been acting in this role for some time and I know that he will continue to receive the full support of the local and national management teams, as they continue to work hard to make Gauteng safer,” Phiyega said on Wednesday.

Mothiba brings with him over 30 years of experience to the position, having gone up the ranks within the SAPS since joining the police in 1982.

He served as commander for seven years at the Alexandra police station, six years at the helm of Human Resource Development and the last four years as the Divisional Commissioner: Visible Policing.

Mothiba has also excelled academically, boasting a National Diploma in Police Administration, which was attained in 1989, a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science and a BA Honours Degree which he attained in 1994 and 1997 respectively.

Mothiba is currently busy with his Master’s Degree in Policing. - SAnews.gov.za
