Pretoria - The newly formed Department of Women, under The Presidency, has welcomed the appointment of Minister Susan Shabangu as its new political head.

Minister Shabangu was among the 35-member Cabinet announced by President Jacob Zuma at a special media briefing in Pretoria on Sunday night.

She takes over from former Minister of the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana. The functions related to the support of people with disabilities have been transferred to the Social Development Department.

The Ministry of Women, Children and People with Disabilities has become the Ministry of Women, located in the Presidency.

“The department would also like to congratulate the newly appointed women ministers and deputy ministers. Women empowerment is a critical vehicle towards gender equality.

“The fact that the composition of the fifth democratic administration has 15 women Ministers and 16 Deputy Ministers is a clear indication that gender parity remains a priority,” the department said. – SAnews.gov.za
