National crime intelligence structure reconfigured

Friday, January 17, 2014

Pretoria - After consultation with affected employees and other organised labour structures, the structure of the Crime Intelligence unit has changed, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said on Thursday.

After careful consideration of the combined functioning of the Division Crime Intelligence and Protection & Security Services (CIPS), Phiyega announced that she has taken a decision to change and “purify this structure.”

Steps have been initiated to ensure that the unit is highly focused and delivers on its core mandate, crime information gathering, and crime pattern analysis in close collaboration with other SAPS departments, she said in a statement.

“The separation of these divisions now allows sharing of focus for better command and control within both environments. This will ultimately lead to more effective and efficient policing. It also has led to Crime Intelligence working a lot closer with other SAPS environments,” said General Phiyega.

She said the SAPS will continue to explore new and improved approaches to continue ensuring that the people of South Africa feel safe.

The change, which is at the implementation stage, will see various posts being advertised with a view to inject more skills and leadership stability into the Crime Intelligence environment.

The Crime Intelligence environment is currently headed by the Acting Divisional Commissioner, Major General Bongiwe Zulu, while the Protection & Security Services environment is headed by the Acting Divisional Commissioner, Major General Sello Kwena.  – SAnews.gov.za
