Pretoria – The North West Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts (SCOPA) is pleased with progress made by the province’s Education Department in working towards achieving a clean audit.

They had also expressed satisfaction with the cooperation and the level of commitment the department has shown in trying to reach 2014 with a clean audit.

This came after Scopa had met with the department for it to account on their Action Plan for the Annual report of 2012/13.

The issues that were picked up by the Auditor General were asset management problems, control measures on leave policy and irregular expenditure.

The department presented its progress report on issues picked by the Auditor General on their Annul Financial Statements.

Committee Chairperson Hlomane Chauke said:  “The committee is happy with the progress of the department.

“We are happy with the stability the department has shown. We would also like to congratulate them on a job well done on the matric results.

“There are teething challenges that we can still improve on but we want to applaud them, they have done us proud”.

Chauke reiterated that the department should seriously deal with issues of fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure and hold those who are responsible accountable.

Auditor-General’s Deputy Business Executive, Schalla van Schalkwyk, said they were also pleased with the progress the department has made.

“Management should monitor themselves monthly not quarterly only, for audit purposes. Let us adhere to the law and make sure that all systems go together “Overall I am happy with the responses received from the department.

“I have faith that this year we will see quite an improvement in the audit outcomes of this department,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
