Pretoria - The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has conveyed it condolences to the family of a soccer supporter, who died at the pitch after a game between Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United.
According to reports, the fan died shortly after the final whistle in the game in which Chiefs beat its rival 2-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening.
City Manager Mpilo Mbambisa expressed the municipality’s concern at the pitch invasion that occurred immediately after the match, saying such scenes have never been witnessed before at the stadium.
“We look forward to receiving a report with solid recommendations from the stadium management to prevent such a recurrence. We wish to state categorically that this weekend's incident is in no way an indication of the stadium's safety systems or the performance of the security services, in particular the SAPS,” said Mbambisa.
Mbambisa said the city is more than ready to host the Nedbank Cup Final on 16 May 2015. He encourage all football-loving fans to watch the match on Saturday.
Mbambisa reiterated their gratitude to the PSL and Nedbank for granting the playing of the final in Nelson Mandela Bay.
