Pretoria – Mpumalanga Education MEC Reginah Mhaule will on Friday convene meetings with various education stakeholders in a bid to improve teaching and learning in underperforming schools in Govan Mbeki Municipality.
“We need to do something urgently to free that municipality from underperformance and ensure that excellence becomes the order of the day.
“We share the strong view that once all stakeholders come to the party and commit in the true sense of the word, things are going to change for the better,” said Mhaule.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality’s 2012 Grade 12 results declined from the 71.3% obtained in 2011 to 64.2% and are currently second from the bottom of 18 municipalities in the province.
Highveld Ridge West Circuit within this municipality would also be looked at, with the circuit sitting on a 57.9% pass rate. Of the 67 circuits in the province, Highveld Ridge West was at position 62.
“In this circuit, there are two secondary schools that are performing below 30% and these are Chief Ampie Mayisa and Vukuqakaze Secondary Schools. Chief Ampie Mayisa Secondary School obtained 15.4% in the 2012 grade 12 results, which represents a decline of 10.9% from the 29.3% obtained in 2011.
“Vukuqakaze Secondary School obtained 24.7% in 2012, which represents a decline of 33.0% from the 57.7% obtained in 2011,” Mhaule noted.
The visit will start at 7am at Chief Ampie Mayisa Secondary School, where Mhaule will address learners and teachers at assembly and thereafter move to the community hall for an engagement with stakeholders.
She will be accompanied by members of department’s senior management, the Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality Lindi Masina, members of the Provincial Quality and Learning and Teaching Campaign Steering Committee and representatives from the Moral Regeneration Movement. – SAnews.gov.za
