Pretoria - The Mpumalanga Department of Education has reached an 80.1% pass mark following the release of the results of the supplementary examinations by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

“These results are indeed a reflection of hard work and dedication from our teachers, learners and parents. We wish to thank all stakeholders, who believed in the vision of government by rallying side by side with the department, leading to the achievement of such results,” said the provincial department.

The results, released by the minister on Monday, showed that 15 030 more young people attained the National Senior Certificate (NSC), which gives them what they need to further their studies.

A total of 66 105 candidates sat for the exams at 6 168 centres across the country. With the release of the supplementary results, the overall national performance from the 2013 matric exams is now at 80%, up by 2.6% from 78.2%.

The Grade 12 results of Mpumalanga improved from 47.9% in 2009, to 80.8% in 2013, making it the most improved province in the country.

“We will not stop mentioning the undivided support received from Premier David Mabuza and teacher unions from the province. Had it not been for their foresight, we would not be celebrating as we do. Indeed, this is a good story to tell,” said Education MEC Reginah Mhaule.

Of the four districts within the province, Ehlanzeni continues to take the lead (84.37%), followed by Nkangala District (80.74%). Gert Sibande (78.38%) and Bohlabela (75.33%) take the third and fourth positions respectively. – SAnews.gov.za
