Saturday, February 5, 2011

Pretoria - Mpumalanga residents who are eligible to vote have turned up in their numbers to register for the forthcoming local government elections.

According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the province, most of the people who turned up were young people.

Provincial Electoral Officer, Jabu Mthethwa, told BuaNews that people turned up in large numbers in all voting stations in the province.

"We are very pleased that people heeded the call that they should come and register and also to check if their names are appearing on the voters roll," Mthethwa said.

"I'm also satisfied with the number of young people who turned up to register," she said.

Mthethwa said no incidences had been reported and everything was going as planned.

By 9am this morning, more than 4 000 people had already registered to vote. By 11am this figure had risen to 13 000 and by 1pm it was at 25 000.
