Pretoria - Traffic authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the road as traffic volumes were expected to increase this week as holiday makers start to make their way home.

Routes that will be busy are the M1 from Limpopo to Gauteng,  M1 from Free state to Gauteng, N3 from Kwazulu-Natal to Gauteng, N4 from Mpumalanga to Gauteng,  N2 from Kwazulu-Natal to Eastern Cape and N2 from  Eastern Cape to Western Cape.

“We are once again calling on motorists to exercise caution when using these busy routes, our law enforcement agencies will be out in full force to monitor and stop vehicles,” said Road Traffic Management Cooperation spokesperson Thato Mosena.

Mosena said large numbers of vehicles were expected on the road from 5 January. She urged motorists to look out for wet condition on the roads and expect eventualities such as tire bursts in extreme hot conditions. According to Mosena, dangerous overtaking, drink and driving and excessive speeding continue to be contributing factors in road crashes. –SAnews.gov.za
