Pretoria - In observing Car Free Day, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has urged motorists to leave their cars behind and use public transport or lift clubs when they come to work on Wednesday.

Car Free Day is one of the highlights of Transport Month, marked on 20 October, which encourages commuters to use public transport in a bid to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

Member of Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure Services, Councillor Themba Thebe, is expected to lead a delegation of officials, including members of the Transport Portfolio Committee, where they will board a train from Springs to Germiston and walk to the Germiston CBD at 7:10am.

Thebe said it was important that motorists take part by leaving their cars behind and use other modes of transportation, noting that this will lead to a cleaner environment as the amount of carbon emissions would be reduced.

"The metro is aware of the challenges around public transport and is currently in talks with all the role players of the industry on a variety of issues, from hygienic areas of operation, customer service and the overhauling of the public transport landscape in the city into a modern state-of-the-art integrated public transport infrastructure," said Thebe.

Transport Month is a national campaign aimed at highlighting challenges while promoting the use of public transport and its role in growing the economy.
