Pretoria - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will on Friday launch what has been referred to as "the most ambitious energy efficiency campaign" which seeks to appeal to all South Africans to conserve electricity.
According to the Presidency, key role-players in the campaign include Eskom, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac), Technology Association of South Africa, government, big business and organised labour.
"As we approach the high-demand period (winter), South Africans are reminded to use electricity sparingly without necessarily undermining their lives and economic activity," said the Presidency.
The call to action was for every South African "to lift a finger, as this is all it takes to switch off a plug."
While there had been no load shedding in South Africa since 2008, the country's energy grid usually experiences extreme pressure in the winter period due to the high demand for electricity.
