Pretoria - Former President Kgalema Motlanthe is set to travel to Botswana for the funeral of that country’s former Vice President Mompati Sebogodi Merafhe.

Motlanthe, who is a Special Envoy, will represent President Jacob Zuma at the funeral on Saturday.

He will be accompanied by the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Llewellyn Landers.

Lieutenant-General Merafhe, 78, passed away last week.

Merafhe was the founding commander of the Botswana Defence Force. He served as the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration from 1989 to 1994, and then Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2008 as the country's longest serving foreign minister.

He held the position of Vice President from 2008 to 2012 before retiring from office due to ill health. – SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
