Pretoria - A man and a woman were arrested on the N2 near Grabouw in the Western Cape on Thursday night following a tip-off from a community member.

Department of Agriculture and Forestry spokesperson Lionel Adendorf said the two were found in possession of 3 768 units of abalone and were taken to the Grabouw police station, while their vehicle was also impounded.

He said the two are expected to appear before the court of law in the area on Monday, 29 October.

Before mid-night on Wednesday, Adendorf said a man abandoned his Nissan-bakkie and ran away after Fisheries Control Officers chased after him in Blompark, Gansbaai.

"On inspection, 4 901 units of abalone were found and we also impounded the abandoned vehicle," he said. - SAnews.gov.za
