Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has appointed Advocate Nomvula Mokhatla, the Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, to act as the Head of the Special Investigating Unit, his office announced on Wednesday.

She takes over from Advocate Nomgcobo Jiba, who has been acting in this position since the announcement of the resignation of Advocate Willem Heath last week.

Heath resigned after he was strongly criticised for claiming that former President Thabo Mbeki interfered in the prosecutions of both Schabir Shaik and Zuma.

Prior to her appointment as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, Mokhatla served in the litigation unit of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. She practiced as an advocate at the Pretoria and Johannesburg Bars before joining the Department.
