Mobile police stations to help fight crime

Pretoria - As part of the wider fight against crime, the South African Police Service (SAPS) will soon embark on a project that will deliver mobile police stations in crime hotspots across the country.

This was announced by Police Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu on Wednesday during a networking session where she invited the business sector to partner with police on the project.

“We request you to mobilise and coordinate your resources towards this project. Criminals retard the socio-economic development of South Africa and the world, and it is in the interest of both government and business to reduce crime of all types.”

Fighting and preventing crime, Deputy Minister Sotyu said, necessitates national and international solidarity.

“Crime has become sophisticated and we need to have sophisticated human resources and tools to deal with this.”

The project is part of a broader transformation within SAPS as per the recommendations of the Marikana Commission of Enquiry.

With the help of a panel of experts that is being assembled, Deputy Minister Sotyu said the transformation will turn SAPS into a professional service delivery oriented department.

The panel will look at reviewing public order policing; analysing international best practice, revising and amending standing procedures and orders, including all other prescripts relevant to public order policing; investigating the adequacy and inadequacy of public order policing methods and other available tools and equipment for use in non-lethal or less force environments.

“This transformation of the SAPS will inevitably focus on the type of a police officer that the National Development Plan blueprint wishes to see,” the Deputy Minister said. – SAnews.gov.za
