Ministers to lead 16 Days of Activism events

Thursday, November 22, 2018

As government launches this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence on Sunday, Cabinet ministers will undertake events throughout the country through community-engagement initiatives.

Cabinet said in a statement on Thursday that the Department of Women is coordinating and consolidating government's calendar of events for the 16 Days of Activism campaign which will run from 25 November to 10 December 2018.

The campaign is a global programme advocating against violence against women and children.

“Members of the National Executive as well as provincial and local government leaders will undertake portfolio/sector-specific events throughout the country through community-engagement initiatives,” Cabinet said.

Detailed government programmes can be accessed from www.gov.za/16DaysofActivism2018.

Cabinet has urged South Africans to use the platform and participate in a government event nearest to them.

“Civil society and other women's organisations are encouraged to populate their calendars of events for the period. All South Africans are urged to work together to heed the call to #HearMeToo, by listening to the plight of women, and taking action to end the scourge of all forms of violence against women,” it said.

Government has embarked on various campaigns against gender-based violence this year, among them were the #100MenMarch in July and the recent Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Summit. – SAnews.gov.za
