Pretoria - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has wished Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu a speedy recovery following his admission to hospital on Tuesday.

The 83-year-old was admitted as a result of a persistent infection. The family have said they are confident he will make a full recovery and that he has a team of excellent doctors taking care of him.

Minister Peters said Archbishop Tutu was an embodiment of peace and hope and is a world-renowned clergy who fought against world injustices.

Under the apartheid regime in South Africa, he campaigned against the white minority rule during the years that the late former President Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. He was awarded the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

She said that even now, while he was in retirement, he continued to dedicate his life to the struggle for human rights and social justice.

“Archbishop Tutu is hailed amongst the most progressive leaders that South Africa has ever produced.

“As we celebrate the Nelson Mandela International Day on Saturday let us all as South Africa and people of the world put Archbishop Tutu and his family on our prayers,” Minister Peters said. – SAnews.gov.za
